Call For Evidence: Inquiry Into Human Rights Violations in Nicaragua – jointly convened by three All Party Parliamentary Groups at Westminster

On behalf of the Nicaragua Inquiry, a cross-party Parliamentary ad-hoc inquiry into politically motivated targeting of the opposition, including religious leaders and institutions, media and others, I am issuing this call for evidence of human rights violations in Nicaragua.

The main objective of this Inquiry is to consider the situation in Nicaragua and the ever-growing suppression of the rights of religious leaders and institutions, the media and the opposition, and identify practical and meaningful steps that can be taken by the UK Government (as well as other States) to address it, as a matter of international concern.

The aim of the Nicaragua Inquiry is to:

  1. consider the situation in Nicaragua, and in particular, the ever-growing targeting of religious leaders and institutions critical of the Government, but also the media and freedom of expression;
  2. identify the assistance (legal, humanitarian, and otherwise) available to those targeted and its shortfalls;
  3. engage the UK Government and international actors with recommendations on assistance to the community, including through the UN Universal Periodic Review of Nicaragua on 8 April 2024.

The Nicaragua Inquiry will be organising several oral hearings throughout the month of February 2024 and is also open to receive written submissions until 10 March 2024.

The next oral hearing is on 8th February.

Please email Dr. Ewelina Ochab [email protected] to let us know whether you would be willing to provide written submissions and identify whether you would prefer to do so anonymously.

Please let us know whether you would like to nominate a person to testify before the Inquiry (whether in person or online).

We look forward to hearing from you.

Yours sincerely,

Lord Alton of Liverpool

Convener of the Nicaragua Inquiry
