Lord Alton wrote to the CEOs of major UK supermarkets, following a damning investigation into products potentially linked to slave labour
This is following a BBC investigation “Blood on the Shelves: The Secrets of Xinjiang’s Tomato Industry”, which found that several own brand ‘Italian’ tomato purees sold in UK supermarkets appear to contain tomatoes grown and picked in China using forced labour. [1]
The 14 Parliamentarians requested that the CEOs set the record straight by outlining how they ensure their supply chains are protected from forced labour.
They also encourage UK supermarkets to avoid misleading customers by being more transparent with product labelling and displaying the country of source of ingredients.
The letter states that “this is an area of significant concern, for both legislators and the public.” Lead signatory, Sarah Champion MP, said “The British public rightly wants answers. I hope this will provide supermarkets the opportunity to set the record straight and rebuild trust with the public.” [2]
The CEOs have been asked to respond by 18th December..
