Baroness Chapman of Darlington, the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, has provided the following answer to your written parliamentary question (HL1148):

Question by Lord Alton of Liverpool:
To ask His Majesty’s Government what steps they have taken, if any, to secure the release of the Uyghur academic Ilham Tohti. (HL1148)

Tabled on: 07 October 2024

Answer:
Baroness Chapman of Darlington:

The Government publicly called for Professor Ilham Tohti’s release on the ten-year anniversary of his sentence in September this year. We stand firm on human rights, including in Xinjiang where China continues to persecute and arbitrarily detain Uyghurs such as Professor Tohti. We raise our concerns at the highest levels of the Chinese government and coordinate efforts in international fora to hold China to account for human rights violations.

Date and time of answer: 15 Oct 2024 at 16:00.

Lord David Alton
