Alongside the fatalities, injuries and chronic suffering and misery which Putin’s war has brought to Ukraine, the economic cost of rebuilding and remedying war damage is now estimated to be close to £1 trillion.
Yesterday David (Lord) Cameron, the Foreign Secretary, told Parliament that he is eager to see the £44 billion of Russian assets frozen in the UK – along with 260 billion Euros of frozen assets in the EU -repurposed to help Ukraine, including the £2.5 billion sale of Chelsea Football Club.
Like the obstacles placed in the way of the creation of a Special Tribunal to prosecute the mother of all crimes, the crime of aggression, the repurposing of assets and the circumvention of sanctions, requires urgent attention./
Government Ministers should commit to chair regular private meetings with interested Parliamentarians until the obstacles and disagreements are ironed out and progress is made in asserting justice and accountability with a steely determination to hold to account those who have been responsible for causing such devastation and suffering.
