Many people loathe blasphemy but question the use of criminal law to deal with it. Such laws can be used to persecute others – including humanists, nonbelievers, and religious minorities. In Pakistan the Blasphemy laws led to the murder of Government Minister Shahbaz Bhatti and Punjab’s Governor, Salman Taseer and the unjust imprisonment of people like Asia Bibi. The long overdue reform of these laws should be prioritised by Imran Khan’s Government – not least because of its membership of the UN Human Rights Council.
He would do well to listen to the views of Professor Amjad Mahmood Khan, Lecturer in Law, University of California, on legal ramifications of blasphemy laws, ( see below, starts at 00:46 ) and those of Shaan Taseer, son of Salmaan Taseer( 00: 56 )on the misuse of these laws as tools against minorities :
