Why does British catholic masonic society protect the children of proven Irish terrorists ? In the 1970s a proven Irish terrorist sympathiser in Romford was caught with an arms / explosives cache in his home BUT his 3 sons went on to lucrative stable employment with British companies. Many of the the surrounding totally innocent British community were unable to find any employment at all. Today the three sons of the terrorist sympathiser have families, property and wealth – local British people including ex-soldiers have very little indeed. How is this justice ?

David, many thanks for the very human story about an aspect of the Titanic voyage – We here in Australia are commemorationg the demise of so many people too and TV and films are available aplenty.
There is also a story about Fr Brown sj which bears repeating as well. I remember only the bare bones of it but he was ordered off the Titanic in Queenstown, I beleive, by his Jesuit superiors – which is why we have the photos of life aboard the Titanic.

Dear Lord Alton,
I have just read on Thinking Faith your article about Liverpool and the Titanic and was delighted to learn details which were completely new to me. I’m originally from Huyton but have for nearly 20 years been working as a missionary in El Salvador. My parents often spoke grievingly of the Titanic but they obviously didn’t know the whole story. Many years ago I was a pupil at Broughton Hall as was another of our Sisters now working in the USA., so this obviously added to the interest…..and the nostalgia. I read a very good article in the Universe yesterday written by yourself.It was only on reflection that I linked the authors name to your website that I had been previously directed to by way of the Brentwood Diocese’s Justice and Peace Commision in regards to the House of Commons debate on assisted suicide (27/3/2012).Our local MP was contacted concerning the motion tabled and asked to consider the issues you highlighted.
In reflection on the Universe article of yours entitled ‘Put pursuit of truth at the heart of our lives’ (1/4/2012) it was comforting to see such an insightful philosophical analysis offered up in the analogy of Pilate’s “What is truth” framed against the modernity of Nietzsche’s assertions.It is so often insinuated that moral relativity originated out of the Enlightenment period and through it’s ensuing philosophical projects that it is refreshing to observe the concept in a much earlier context.However, I do have reservations about globilisation being the ‘new Roman Empire’ per se with the deterministic characteristics that entails after reading the potentials for positive change enshrined in the reform of the international financial and monetary systems in the context of global public authority, released by the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace last year.

The full consequences of Margaret Thatcher’s endless privatisation programme seem to be dawning on people at last. The current generation appear to have started to appreciate that private capital has to be policed and has no automatic compulsion to uphold the law or any accepted moral code only their self-interest. Private capital frequently and publicly challenges elected national authority and their colleagues in the media give them a platform to do so. Do we have to wait in cycles of decades for people to realise this eternal truth over and over again ? The criminals greatest friend appears to be public ignorance – we need thinkers – thank god that the church has some !
